Which stream after Class 10?

A plain guide to Science, Commerce and Arts for families choosing Class 11 subjects. It is general information, not a list of what Ed-Merit offers.

Streams offered at Ed-Merit: to be confirmed by the school.

What you study

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Maths or Biology
  • English
  • an optional subject such as Computer Science or Physical Education

Two common groups: PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) and PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology). Some students take all four.

Where it can lead

  • Engineering, after entrance exams such as JEE
  • Medicine, nursing and allied health, after NEET
  • B.Sc. in pure or applied sciences
  • Computer science, architecture, pharmacy

It may suit a student who

enjoys maths or how things work, is comfortable with regular practicals, and can keep up a steady weekly study routine.

Science students can still move to commerce or arts degrees later; the reverse is harder for some courses.

Subjects get deeper, especially maths and science. A good year to build steady study habits before the board years.

    First board exams

The Class 10 board exam is usually held around February–March. Before results, families start thinking about the stream for Class 11.

    The stream begins

Science, Commerce or Arts. New subjects, more practicals and a big jump in difficulty, so the first months matter.

Final boards and what comes next

The Class 12 board exam, entrance exams and college applications, usually all in the same few months.
